What happened
The medieval church on Coney Street burnt out during the raid, losing its nave, north aisle and east end. It was reconstructed between 1961 and 1968 by the architect George Pace, who deliberately left part of the ruin standing as a memorial rather than rebuilding the whole footprint.
Also worth knowing
Its great fifteenth-century west window had been removed and stored for safekeeping in 1940. It survived the fire and was reinstalled in the rebuilt south wall, where it now faces the street.
Photographs
Photographs of the Baedeker raid
Raids Over York has a large photographic record of this night. The images belong to the York Press, Explore York, the National Railway Museum and private collectors — not to us, and not to the project either — so this links to them rather than copying them.
