What happened
Ten people were killed in this suburban street on the northern edge of the city, eight of them at number 110 — members of the Helstrip, Duncan and Hyde families, four of whom were children aged between ten months and six years.
Casualty note
Ten named individuals recorded in Spalding Avenue in the Raids Over York casualty register.
Also worth knowing
Spalding Avenue rarely appears in popular accounts of the raid, which tend to follow the Guildhall, the station and the Bar Convent. It was one of the worst domestic losses of the night.
Photographs
Photographs of the Baedeker raid
Raids Over York has a large photographic record of this night. The images belong to the York Press, Explore York, the National Railway Museum and private collectors — not to us, and not to the project either — so this links to them rather than copying them.
