What happened
A single Dornier Do-217 came in over York in daylight and dropped four 500kg bombs across the city at about 16:36. One burst by the slipway on Skeldergate, beside the Ouse. Sidney Thompson, a 33-year-old National Fire Service man, was killed on a river patrol boat at King's Staith; 43 people were hurt.
Casualty note
One named fireman recorded in the Raids Over York casualty register. Raids Over York's narrative gives his first name as either Sidney or Stanley; the casualty record says Sidney.
Also worth knowing
Two of the four bombs from this raid — at Buckingham Works on Bishophill and in the Castle grounds by Clifford's Tower — failed to explode.

Raids Over York has a large photographic record of this night. The images belong to the York Press, Explore York, the National Railway Museum and private collectors — not to us, and not to the project either — so this links to them rather than copying them.
