What happened
High explosive and incendiaries hit the station and its approaches, wrecking platforms 1 to 3, destroying the parcels office by fire and gutting the booking office. The 22:15 King's Cross to Edinburgh express was standing at the platform when it was hit and set alight; seven service personnel aboard were wounded.
Casualty note
Two named railway staff recorded at the station in the Raids Over York casualty register. The seven wounded service passengers on the Edinburgh express are recorded as injured, not killed.
Also worth knowing
Station foreman William Milner, 42, went back into a burning building to fetch medical supplies for the injured and was killed. He was posthumously awarded the King's Commendation for Brave Conduct, and there is a memorial to him at the station. LNER railway policeman Robert William Smith, 64, died at the police office.

Raids Over York has a large photographic record of this night. The images belong to the York Press, Explore York, the National Railway Museum and private collectors — not to us, and not to the project either — so this links to them rather than copying them.
