What happened
A high-explosive bomb fell on the lawn about a hundred feet behind the school's main building. Betty Pope, aged six, was killed in the school's air-raid shelter.
Casualty note
One named individual recorded at the Queen Anne's School shelter in the Raids Over York casualty register. The nearby Queen Anne's Road deaths are recorded at those addresses, not here.
Also worth knowing
The housing on Queen Anne's Road immediately alongside was hit separately and much harder — four died at number 20, two at number 18, and two more in the Welwyn House flats.
Photographs
Photographs of the Baedeker raid
Raids Over York has a large photographic record of this night. The images belong to the York Press, Explore York, the National Railway Museum and private collectors — not to us, and not to the project either — so this links to them rather than copying them.
