What happened
Two women died at Nunthorpe Grove on the night of 5 March 1945 — Laura Thompson, 74, and Lydia Helstrip, 80. It was almost certainly Operation Gisela, the Luftwaffe's last large intruder operation over Britain, in which night fighters followed returning RAF bombers home and attacked their airfields and the country beneath them.
