What happened
Three high-explosive bombs fell on the carriage works site — by the aircraft detail shop and the sawmill log stack as well as here — and none of them exploded. Fourteen bombs failed to detonate across York that night.
Also worth knowing
Unexploded bombs shut ground down for as long as it took to clear them, which on a railway works in 1942 meant halting war production as surely as a hit would have. No deaths are recorded at these three points.
Photographs
Photographs of the Baedeker raid
Raids Over York has a large photographic record of this night. The images belong to the York Press, Explore York, the National Railway Museum and private collectors — not to us, and not to the project either — so this links to them rather than copying them.
