What happened
The fifteenth-century Guildhall was gutted by fire after incendiaries fell on the civic buildings beside the Ouse. The roof and the medieval stained glass were lost; the shell of the hall survived and was rebuilt to the original design, reopening in 1960.
Also worth knowing
The point here is the Guildhall building itself rather than a plotted bomb position — the bomb census records this quarter of the city by ward, so no single georeferenced strike exists for the hall.
Photographs
Photographs of the Baedeker raid
Raids Over York has a large photographic record of this night. The images belong to the York Press, Explore York, the National Railway Museum and private collectors — not to us, and not to the project either — so this links to them rather than copying them.
