What happened

One of the four 500kg bombs from the daylight raid of 2 August 1942 fell in the Castle grounds beside Clifford's Tower and did not go off.

Also worth knowing

Clifford's Tower is the surviving keep of York Castle and the site of the massacre of the city's Jewish community in 1190. It came through both raids of 1942 undamaged.

Raids Over York has a large photographic record of this night. The images belong to the York Press, Explore York, the National Railway Museum and private collectors — not to us, and not to the project either — so this links to them rather than copying them.
