What happened
A bomb burst in the roadway outside numbers 53 to 55. Nine people died, including three of the Ezard family — nine-year-old Muriel, her mother Ellen and her father James.

Also worth knowing
Two of the dead were Air Raid Wardens killed on duty in the street they were patrolling: Albert Emmerson, 29, and John Herbert Fowler, 34.
