What happened
High explosive struck the crescent in at least two places, including a direct hit on number 16. Ten people were killed along it, among them eleven-year-old Christine Blenkin and her fourteen-year-old sister Pauline.

Also worth knowing
Four of the ten were civil-defence personnel who had turned out for the raid: firewatchers Ernest Atkin and Halbert Ord, Deputy Head Warden George Colman, and Arthur Broadhead of the National Fire Service.
