What happened

Incendiaries fell across the east of the city — Regent Street, Tang Hall, the Foss Islands goods station and Lawrence Street — with a direct hit on number 12 Belle Vue Terrace.

Casualty note

Three people died in this raid across the city: Civil Defence Warden Joseph Kirby, 57; Percy Beckwith, 61, at St Aelred's rest centre; and Thomas Marsh, 84, of Aldwark. None of the three is recorded at this address, so no figure is placed on this pin.

Photographs

Photographs of the raid of 24 September 1942

Raids Over York has a large photographic record of this night. The images belong to the York Press, Explore York, the National Railway Museum and private collectors — not to us, and not to the project either — so this links to them rather than copying them.
