What happened
A high-explosive bomb fell on the pavement between numbers 37 and 39 of this short terraced street in Holgate. Fourteen people died here — the heaviest loss at any single location in the raid, and more than at any of the landmarks the raid is usually remembered for.
Casualty note
Fourteen named individuals recorded at numbers 35, 37 and 39 Amberley Street in the Raids Over York casualty register.
Also worth knowing
Nine of the dead were in number 35 alone: five members of the Button family, including 22-month-old Gillian, twelve-year-old Audrey and fifteen-year-old Kenneth; two of the Jackson family; and two of the Nutters, one of them two years old.

Raids Over York has a large photographic record of this night. The images belong to the York Press, Explore York, the National Railway Museum and private collectors — not to us, and not to the project either — so this links to them rather than copying them.
