What happened

Yeovil's first and most serious air raid, followed by a second the next day. Two bombs made direct hits on air raid shelters — one in Preston Road, one at Vicarage Street Methodist Church.

Casualty note

The 27 dead covers both the 7 October raid and a second raid the following day; the source does not split the figure by day.

Also worth knowing

Across the war Yeovil recorded ten air raids and 107 high-explosive bombs, killing or fatally wounding 49 people. No incendiaries are recorded as having fallen on the town. The last raid, on 5 August 1942, damaged nearly a thousand houses; it is noted here rather than mapped separately because it would anchor to this same town-centre point.
