What happened
Wallasey's most severe raid of the war fell across three nights in March 1941, with the heaviest destruction in Church Street, Lancaster Avenue and Foxhey Road. Eleven churches were damaged and around 10,000 people were made homeless.
Casualty note
174 killed and 158 seriously injured across the WHOLE of Wallasey during the three-night March raid, not at Lancaster Avenue alone. Wallasey's war total is given as 324 by one local source and 332 by another.
Also worth knowing
A baby was recovered alive from the Lancaster Avenue rubble after three and a half days, shielded by her parents' bodies and a Victorian cradle. Across the war Wallasey recorded 658 high-explosive bombs and thousands of incendiaries.
