What happened
A Focke-Wulf 190 fighter-bomber scored a direct hit on the Royal Cornwall Infirmary with a 500kg bomb, demolishing the south wing. There was no air raid warning: the German tactic of arriving fast and low had evaded both radar and, in part, the Royal Observer Corps. Fourteen people were killed, 65 injured, three houses destroyed and more than 100 damaged.
Casualty note
14 killed and 65 injured across the raid as a whole.
Also worth knowing
Despite the damage, half the hospital was back in use within a week and emergency surgical cases were being admitted three days after the raid.
