What happened
The longest raid on Bristol, lasting over eleven hours, with 178 aircraft dropping about 152 tonnes of high explosive and more than 53,000 incendiaries. Temple Meads lost platforms 9 and 12, its booking office, telegraph office and clock tower.
Also worth knowing
A 2,000kg bomb nicknamed 'Satan' fell during this raid and failed to explode. It was not recovered until April 1943, and was later paraded through London in the 1945 Victory Parade.
