What happened

A recreational scuba diver and his nephew found a German SC1200 bomb on the seabed close to the pier. Police evacuated seafront properties so that a bomb disposal team could tow the device clear of the town before Royal Navy divers destroyed it at sea.

How it was made safe

Towed out to sea and destroyed in a controlled explosion by Royal Navy divers from Devonport.

Evacuation

Seafront properties evacuated while the device was moved.

Also worth knowing

The SC1200 carried around 631kg of Trialen high explosive — among the largest devices recovered on the Devon coast in recent years.
