What happened
The medieval castle stood in the middle of the burning town centre and came through the three nights. The buildings around it did not.
Casualty note
No deaths recorded at this site.
Also worth knowing
Like York Minster and Canterbury Cathedral, it is plotted here for surviving rather than for being hit. Surviving stonework in nearby Castle Street still shows changes in colour and texture where bomb damage was patched with concrete.
