What happened
At 6.37pm the first V-2 rocket to strike Britain fell on Staveley Road near the junction with Burlington Lane, leaving a crater about thirty feet across and destroying houses. The rocket had been launched from Wassenaar in the occupied Netherlands.
Casualty note
Three killed, including a three-year-old girl, and 19 injured.
