What happened
All of St Thomas' Church was destroyed except its tower and classical west portico. Around 25,000 incendiaries fell on the city that night.
Casualty note
No figure for the church itself. For context only, 263 were killed and 243 badly injured across Birmingham in this thirteen-hour raid, the longest of the city's Blitz — a city-wide total.
Also worth knowing
The church was never rebuilt; the surviving fragments and grounds were laid out in 1995 as St Thomas' Peace Garden.
