What happened
An incendiary set fire to St Luke's just after midnight, gutting the interior and roof and bringing down the bells, while the outer walls largely survived. The shell was deliberately left standing as a memorial to the May Blitz.
Casualty note
No casualties are recorded for this site. The figures often quoted alongside it — over 1,900 killed and nearly 1,500 seriously injured — are city-wide totals for the whole May Blitz week of 1-8 May 1941.
Also worth knowing
Known locally as the Bombed Out Church, it remains a civic landmark and events venue.
