What happened
A V-2 struck the market at the junction of Charterhouse Street and Farringdon Road late on a weekday morning, the buildings collapsing into the railway tunnels beneath. The death toll was high because crowds had gathered for a rare consignment of rabbit meat during rationing.
Casualty note
110 killed and 366 injured. A small number of accounts date the strike to 9 March; the memorial on site records 8 March 1945.
Also worth knowing
A brass memorial disc, its pattern based on a cross-section of a V-2, marks the site at the J J Mack Building.
