What happened
A Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighter-bomber struck the school at about half past twelve during a low-level daylight raid. The air-raid siren had not sounded before the aircraft arrived, and most of the dead were children eating lunch in the dining hall.
Casualty note
38 children and six staff. Thirty-two children died at the school and six later in hospital; around 60 people were injured.

Thirty-one children and one teacher were buried together at Hither Green Cemetery before a crowd of more than 7,000 mourners.
