What happened
The 2,562-seat Art Deco Rex, opened in February 1937, was Coventry's newest cinema and the first in the city to be bombed.
Also worth knowing
The date is contested. Cinema Treasures gives damage on 25 August 1940 and total destruction on 2 November 1940; Historic Coventry gives only 'in 1940'. The often-repeated claim that it was destroyed on 14 November could not be verified, so it is not asserted here.
