What happened

A direct hit destroyed the boiler room in the basement, fracturing a gas main and turning the basement — in use as an air-raid shelter — into an inferno within fifteen minutes. Heat prevented rescue attempts for 48 hours.

Also worth knowing

The image of the building's tower left leaning alone among the ruins became the defining photograph of the Hull Blitz. It was demolished the next day.
