What happened
The warehouse buildings along Parker Street, on the south side of Piccadilly Gardens, were destroyed during the Christmas Blitz, in a commercial district that suffered some of the raid's worst fire damage. Around 2,000 incendiaries started roughly 600 fires across the two nights.
Casualty note
No site-specific figure. Around 684 people were killed across Manchester during the Christmas Blitz.
Also worth knowing
The gardens themselves survived. The cleared bombsite was eventually redeveloped as Piccadilly Plaza between 1959 and 1965.
