What happened
On the heaviest night of the London Blitz, incendiary and high-explosive bombs struck the Palace of Westminster. The Commons Chamber was gutted by fire, the roof of Westminster Hall was set alight, and the Lords Chamber and Clock Tower were damaged.
Casualty note
No Palace-specific death toll is given by the parliamentary sources consulted. The House of Lords Library records 1,436 civilian deaths across London on that night's raid — a city-wide figure, not one for this site.
Also worth knowing
The Commons sat in the Lords Chamber from June 1941 until 1950, when Giles Gilbert Scott's replacement Chamber opened.
