What happened
A bomb aimed at the Trafford Park industrial area struck Manchester United's Main Stand, wrecking it almost completely and scorching the pitch.

Wartime censorship meant the Manchester Guardian could report only 'slight outbreaks of fire at a football ground'. Manchester City offered United the use of Maine Road, where they played from April 1941 until 1949.
