What happened
The Noss shipyard on the east bank of the Dart, then building and repairing small warships, was hit in a daylight raid. It was the worst single loss of life in the Dartmouth area during the war.
Casualty note
Figures vary between sources — around 20 is the most commonly cited, with Devon Heritage naming 15 of the dead. The workforce included ARP wardens, an NFS fireman aged 17 and a Home Guard member aged 17.
Also worth knowing
The Kingswear side of the river fell under Brixham Urban District Council at the time, so the dead appear in both the Brixham and Dartmouth casualty lists. The yard survived and continued operating for decades afterwards.
