What happened
A V-2 struck the crowded Woolworths store on New Cross Road at 12.26pm on a Saturday, collapsing the building and devastating the adjoining Co-operative store and nearby offices. The blast overturned lorries and threw debris up to half a mile.
Casualty note
168 killed, including 33 children, and around 122 injured.
Also worth knowing
It remains one of the worst single civilian-casualty incidents on British soil during the war. Memorial plaques mark the site.
