What happened
Newcastle's heaviest raid set fire to the New Bridge Street goods station beside Manors, said to be the largest covered goods station in the country. Packed with sugar, linseed and cattle feed, it burned for weeks.
Casualty note
50 killed, 71 seriously injured, 140 slightly injured and over 1,000 made homeless — figures for the RAID AS A WHOLE, described as Newcastle's most severe, not for the goods station alone.
Also worth knowing
Around 400 people were killed in Newcastle between July 1940 and December 1941. The site was cleared in the 1980s.
