What happened
A stick of incendiaries intended for the Dockyard fell across the Tamar onto Mount Edgcumbe House, the Edgcumbe family seat since the 1550s. The interiors burned out completely, leaving only the outer walls standing.
Also worth knowing
A number of Joshua Reynolds family portraits were lost with the house. Rebuilding began in 1951 and ran to 1964, omitting the original central tower; the estate was bought jointly by Cornwall County Council and Plymouth City Council in 1971. A clear illustration of how far off-target loads fell — this is roughly 2km south-west of the intended aiming point.
