The Metropolitan-Vickers works on Mosley Road, one of the largest engineering plants in the Trafford Park industrial estate, was badly damaged during the Christmas Blitz.

Trafford Park was the Luftwaffe's principal industrial objective in Manchester, also housing Ford's aero-engine plant and A. V. Roe production. 272 tons of high explosive fell on the city on the night of 22/23 December and a further 195 tons the next night — city-wide figures.
