What happened
The Marine Biological Association's laboratory on the Hoe, sited next to the Royal Citadel, was severely damaged by bombing — an unintended casualty of its proximity to a military target.
Also worth knowing
Staff spent the following months repairing lab space, with unexploded bombs still reported in and around the premises weeks later. The Nobel-winning nerve-conduction research of Hodgkin and Huxley resumed there in 1947 once it was rebuilt.
