What happened
A V-1 heading for London was shot down by a fighter over Little Chart and fell onto the medieval Church of St Mary at about eight in the evening. The nave, north aisle, chancel and north chapel were destroyed.
Also worth knowing
The west tower of about 1500 and part of the chancel survive as a listed ruin. No injuries were reported — one of many V-1s brought down over Kent short of their target, which is why the county was called bomb alley.
