What happened
During Birkenhead's heaviest raids of the war, parachute land mines detonated in Laird Street, flattening a long run of terraced housing. Casualties extended into the streets behind.
Casualty note
Compiled by a local-history project from Commonwealth War Graves Commission and civilian war dead address records, covering Laird Street numbers 294-346 and the neighbouring Bertha Street and Miriam Place.
Also worth knowing
The parachute-mine identification rests on eyewitness testimony and the damage pattern rather than an official record. Birkenhead's war death toll of 442 is a borough-wide figure, not one for this street.
