What happened
The medieval church took a direct hit and was burnt out, leaving a shell. Around 800 high-explosive bombs and 9,000 incendiaries fell on the town centre that night.
Casualty note
No deaths are attributed to the church itself. The raid of 30 November killed 137 people across the town, 96 of them in air raid shelters — a town-wide figure.
Also worth knowing
The ruins were dedicated in 1957 as a memorial to Merchant Navy seafarers and now house a Titanic memorial fountain.
