What happened
A bomb struck an air-raid shelter inside the naval training establishment HMS Raleigh, killing 44 sailors and 21 Royal Engineers — 65 deaths in a single incident, across the Tamar from the Plymouth raids of the same night.
Also worth knowing
The Royal Engineers are thought to have belonged to two troops based in the Plymouth area, preparing assault boats for the North Africa campaign. The dead are buried at Horson Cemetery, Torpoint, where HMS Raleigh still holds an annual service. Point placed at the establishment, not the shelter — its exact position within the site isn't published.
