What happened
The first V-1 flying bomb to reach London fell on the railway bridge carrying the Liverpool Street to Stratford line over Grove Road, Mile End. Houses in Antill Road and neighbouring streets were wrecked and the line was severed.

Six killed and 42 injured.

Services resumed within about 40 hours on a temporary bridge. An English Heritage blue plaque on the bridge records the event.
