What happened
47 bombs fell on Exmouth across 14 air raids, predominantly tip-and-run attacks on opportunistic targets. The River Exe was used as a navigational aid by Luftwaffe crews, leaving the town exposed to overspill from the much heavier raids on Exeter.
Also worth knowing
On 26 February 1943 the gas holder, housing and a train were machine-gunned during a raid on the town — one of the last significant attacks on Exmouth.
