What happened
The City Library was burnt out, with roughly one million books lost, including much of the Devon and Exeter Institution's holdings and the city's irreplaceable local archive.
Also worth knowing
One of the worst single losses of documentary heritage in the English blitz. It is also why some Exeter incidents are harder to research than those elsewhere — the records burned with the building.
