What happened
A bomb struck the Chapel of St James in the Cathedral's south choir aisle, destroying three bays of the outer wall, two flying buttresses, and the chapel itself along with its monuments.
Also worth knowing
The Cathedral's stained glass had been removed for safekeeping in 1940, saving it from the blast. Missing masonry was patched with asbestos and Sunralite panels for years afterward; scaffolding still stands in place of the lost buttresses today.
