What happened
A seven-hour attack by 164 aircraft dropped roughly 164 tonnes of high explosive and nearly 34,000 incendiaries on Bristol and Avonmouth. Poor visibility caused the bombing to drift into densely built working-class suburbs, producing the highest single-night death toll of the Bristol raids.
Also worth knowing
This marker is a district-level anchor covering Easton, St Paul's, Whitehall and Fishponds, not a bomb location. UWE's Bristol History Resource describes this as perhaps the worst Bristol raid measured by casualties: 257 killed and 391 injured.
