What happened

Chatham Dockyard, the Nore Command's principal naval base, was bombed on 19 August 1940. The nights of 27 and 28 August brought what contemporary records describe as one of the Medway Towns' worst attacks of the war.

Casualty note

Three dockyard workers killed and two wounded in the 19 August raid. The raids of 27-28 August killed 21 and seriously wounded 19 across the Medway Towns as a whole — not at the dockyard alone.

Also worth knowing

Bombs later fell on dockyard buildings including the Fitted Rigging House, the Locomotive Shop and the Factory.
