What happened
In the early hours the Luftwaffe struck Canterbury as part of the Baedeker reprisal raids for the RAF attack on Cologne. The commercial heart of the city around St George's Street and the Longmarket was gutted; 800 buildings were destroyed and around 6,000 more damaged.
Casualty note
43 killed and around 100 injured across the city — a city-wide total for the raid, not a figure for this street.
Also worth knowing
The burnt-out St George's clock tower survives as a marker of the destroyed quarter.
