What happened
A high-explosive bomb struck the Co-operative store at 340 Stanley Road, whose basement was in use as a public shelter, reached through the billiards hall on the corner of Ash Street. The front wall was blown out and the upper floors collapsed onto those below.
Casualty note
Deliberately left blank. The source records only that 'many' died, and that 40 of the bodies at the temporary mortuary were never identified, several of them from this shelter. No reliable count exists.
Also worth knowing
Bootle was, proportionally, the most heavily bombed borough in the country: the Imperial War Museum records that 8,000 of its 17,000 houses were destroyed or damaged in the May Blitz.
