What happened
Two Focke-Wulf 190s ran a succession of bombs and cannon fire across the town. The Retort House at the gas works and the food depot in Mill Street were demolished, and houses in Mill Street and Berrycoombe Road destroyed or badly damaged.
Casualty note
Nine killed and 18 injured; eight of the dead were from a single family, the Sargents, whose home was wrecked.
Also worth knowing
Part of a run of tip-and-run attacks across Cornwall over several days that August — the Truro and St Ives raids came from the same campaign.
