What happened
A member of the public found a heavily corroded Second World War shell on the beach at Birling Gap. The beach was cleared and the device destroyed at about half past four; it reopened shortly after five.
How it was made safe
Moved into the water by a Royal Navy bomb disposal team and destroyed in a controlled explosion.
Also worth knowing
The shell was too corroded to carry identifying marks — a common outcome for coastal finds, and the reason many are recorded as unspecified.
