What happened
An underground shelter serving the Arundel Street area took a direct hit during Portsmouth's heaviest raid. Most of the dead were buried together in Kingston Cemetery.
Casualty note
Sources conflict sharply: contemporary and secondary accounts give 47 killed by a direct hit on the shelter, while the memorial plaque on the site states 80 men, women and children died — though only 76 names are listed on it.
